Mr Armstrong has an extremely caring attitude towards his patients. He listens to you and always looks you in the eye during conversation, making you feel confident your concerns are really being listened to and addressed. He has an excellent bedside manner and a great team around him where there is an obvious respect for each other. He is very clear about what will happen during your treatment and certainly puts you at ease. I would ask for or recommend Mr Armstrong in a heartbeat.

From the very first appointment with Doctor Armstrong I was put totally at ease. He understood my request for a speedy operation due to personal commitments. He explained the whole procedure fairly and honestly giving me all the benefits and pitfalls the operation entailed. He did not gloss over anything and took time to answer my questions, giving me confidence to make an informed decision, one I do not regret at all. I never thought I would say an operation was a good experience but Dr Armstrong and his theatre team certainly made it a pleasure. They all encouraged me during the operation, the atmosphere was calm and friendly and they were attentive and made the whole process easy and pain free. I have no qualms about having my other hand operated on and trust Dr Armstrong and his team explicitly.

During my attachment as a medical student at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, I have seen and learnt so much from Mr Armstrong. He is not only a bright surgeon and a great teacher, but also a good listener and a caring person to every patient and staff. Often, patients may face difficulties in making a decision for their treatment. Mr Armstrong would always explain to the patient regarding each option until one has understood, encourages one to take some time to think and acts in the best interest of the patient. It's about preserving the function of the hand as much as possible and how it will affect the patient's daily living. I want to be a surgeon like him in the future. I also thought to myself, if anything happens to my hand, I wish I can be seen by him.

After poor initial treatment elsewhere, Dr Armstrong swiftly undertook ORIF surgery of my broken metacarpal at Royal Derby Hospital. With regular follow up appointments at Mansfield King's Mill Hospital, including rehabilitation therapy, my hand was fixed in good time. My best experience from the NHS, very efficient and professional throughout.

Profile

I am a Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. My practice is entirely Hand and Wrist problems and I have a large proportion of tertiary referral work for complex issues. I also have an interest in minimally invasive surgery - endoscopic carpal and cubital tunnel release, Xiapex/Collagenase, Needle Aponeurotomy etc.

I underwent orthopaedic training in the Trent Region, gaining the FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) exam. I have undertaken specialist training in Derby, Nottingham and Oxford where I was the National Hand Fellow. I have been examined in, and passed, the British Post Graduate hand Diploma.
